Walter is a Professor of African History and the Chair of the Department of History at Michigan State University. His research focuses on African religious beliefs, agricultural practices, and family structures, as well as the African slave trade. He is the author of two books: Planting Rice and Harvesting Slaves: Transformations along the Guinea-Bissau Coast, 1400-1900 and From Africa to Brazil: Culture, Identity, and an Atlantic Slave Trade, 1600-1830.

With MATRIX, Walter is involved in the Slave Biographies: The Atlantic Database Network and the Islam and Modernity project.
