We mourn the loss of a remarkable historian and digital historian, David Bailey. He has been a long time partner, supporter, and friend of Matrix. He was PI on several Matrix grants, including “Battle Creek: Teaching American History” (2006-2009) and “Voices from Detroit: American Black Journal Online” (2004-2006). The “Battle Creek” project made it possible for area high school teachers to deepen their knowledge of American
history and learn new digital skills. The “Voices from Detroit” project helped to save the long history of the American Black Journal and make it available online (http://abj.matrix.msu.edu/). In 2008, he created the online resource about “Detroit Black Churches” (http://detroitchurches.history.msu.edu/).
He was perhaps most proud of some of his early work in digital history. In 2001, he was the guiding light behind the development of “Flint Sit-Down Strike Audio Gallery” (http://flint.matrix.msu.edu). His project, "Pluralism and Unity" (http://pluralism.matrix.msu.edu/), investigates the multiple dimensions of American modernity and pluralism, and in 1998 it was displayed at the American Pavilion of the World Expo in Lisbon, Portugal.
He never stopped innovating in digital history teaching. He developed several courses run in the new Lab for the Education and Advancement in Digital Research (LEADR) (http://leadr.msu.edu/projects/fall-2014-3/pluralism/). This semester he was teaching a new course in LEADR incorporating building digital games. He also gave a recent talk at the MSU library "Learning from my Students: Evolving ideas of the Utility of Humanities Technology in the Classroom” (http://digitalhumanities.msu.edu/locus/past/).
We will miss David greatly. Few scholars have had his breadth of knowledge or the deep, loving support of so many colleagues and students.
